Like all retail businesses its important to know your customer so you can attract more of them. Sales is a funnel: the addressable market, then the target market, then the prospects (people that come to the store), and then finally customers (people that pay). Some of it is just a numbers game. Bringing more people into the funnel will mean more customers.

It is helpful to understand where your are losing people. Are they coming to the store but not buying? Or are not enough people coming to the store? If prospects come but don't buy, you have a sales or merchandising problem. You will need to look at your sales tactics with people in the store. You should also look at the fit between your inventory and your customers. Does your inventory meet their tastes?

If you don't have enough people coming to the store, there might be two explanations. First, your location might not be right. Retail, like real estate, relies heavily on location. Second, you might just have an advertising problem. Do your prospects know about your store? Are you spending enough on advertising or in the right places?

I've included links to two national associations of antique dealers that might help.

Sell things that are old but definitely are of high quality. "In today’s competitive business environment, cheap products and services generally attract more consumers; but, what is being overlooked is the value of quality. Selling cheap pairs of shoes may draw a lot of customers at first but will those customers come back for more? Quality is still the top factor in gaining market advantage. It is important that you are confident with your product or service so it will be easier for you to endorse them to others."

Sell something that everyone can buy, for kids, mothers, workers, etc. Include giveaways, promos, and decorate your shop.
