  • What's a good way to provide feedback to groups on their behavior?

I'm having a hard time getting people to "see" themselves as others see them. As an Human Resources generalist, I deal with many leadership, team building, compensation and benefits issues. In this case, I have a particularly challenging team. They are bickering and unproductive. There doesn't seem to be any one person instigating the difficulties. Would appreciate some help getting the group to observe their own behavior to break through the issues.

Why keep the team together? If the output of the team is poor, then either the team lead / manager is the issue or the team should be disbanded and reassigned. Its all about the output.

Turn on the camera! Taking a video of a team meeting can show clearly both individual behaviors and group dynamics. The role of the facilitator is key: tell everyone ahead of time what you are doing and why. Frame it as an opportunity to learn by observation. Ever had your golf swing or your ski run filmed? It's a powerful tool that can show what you are doing wrong and cut through hours of just talking. After each video session, allow time to watch the movie as a group and talk about what can be done differently to improve collaboration and productivity. Then erase the tape.
