The disadvantages seem obvious! but some employers continue to use this system. Why?

I'm having a hard time getting people to "see" themselves as others see them. As an Human Resources generalist, I deal with many leadership, team building, compensation and benefits issues. In this case, I have a particularly challenging team. They are bickering and unproductive. There doesn't seem to be any one person instigating the difficulties. Would appreciate some help getting the group to observe their own behavior to break through the issues.

This is a 9-person group, diverse in gender, age, management level, and company experience. The off-site meeting is primarily for strategic planning.
